Bacardi-owned Irish whiskey brand Teeling has released the fourth edition in its explorative Wonders of the Wood series.
The series explores how unique oak species influence the flavour of Irish single pot still whiskeys.
Jack Teeling, founder and managing director of Teeling Whiskey, commented: “This series is about curiosity and progress by asking what happens when you take a uniquely Irish style and mature it in wood rarely used in our category.
“The answer keeps surprising us. Single pot still is Ireland’s original whiskey style. We’re simply giving it new terrain to explore.”
Previous releases from the Wonders of Wood series include the First Edition, aged in virgin Chinkapin American white oak (2021); the Second Edition, matured in virgin Portuguese oak (2022); and the Third Edition, aged in virgin Swedish oak casks (2023).
The fourth limited edition whiskey is made from a traditional mash bill of 50% malted barley and 50% unmalted barley, triple-distilled at the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin, and matured in virgin Carpathian oak casks.
The oak is sourced from the ancient forests of the Carpathian Mountains, which stretch across Central and Eastern Europe.
Known for its tight grain and high tannin structure, the rare Carpathian oak imparts distinct notes of spice, sandalwood, and a complex character of layered orchard fruits.
Bottled at 50% ABV, Fourth Edition offers aromas of rosewater, candied fruits and freshly cut wood, followed on the palate by notes of spice, apple, pears and sandalwood.
Jack continued: “Wood does the heavy lifting in whiskey. It builds the layers, the spice, the structure and the personality. With Wonders of Wood, we are deliberately putting that influence under the microscope.
“Carpathian Oak brings a bold, tannic and distinctive spice that gives this single pot still (whiskey) a character all of its own.”
Teeling Wonders of Wood Virgin Carpathian Oak Release is now available in select markets, with a recommended retail price of €80 (US$93).
As part of the Wonders of the Woods initiative, Teeling continues its partnership with the Tree Council of Ireland to support the reforestation of Irish woodlands.
Previous releases in the limited series have funded the planting of three acres of Irish trees in County Wicklow and Dublin.
With Teeling’s latest edition, an additional acre will be planted.
Teeling’s other limited edition collections include Sommelier Selection and Rising Reserve.
Last year was challenging for the Dublin-based distillery, with its post-tax profits plunging by 91% as the US imposed tariffs on imports of Irish whiskey.
